Fillings
Fillings are synthetic materials
that are used to restore a portion of a tooth damaged by decay or
traumatic injury. There are different types of materials used to fill
cavities.
Composite fillings are a mixture of
glass or quartz filler in a resin-medium that produces a tooth-colored
filling. Composite fillings provide good durability and resistance to
fracture. Composite fillings bond directly to the tooth surface
producing a stronger filling. This bonding usually allows Dr.Buchholtz
to make a more conservative repair to the tooth. Amalgams are the
silver-colored fillings many people have had placed in their teeth
following treatment of a cavity.
Amalgam fillings are a combination of
various metal alloys, including copper, tin, silver and mercury.
Mercury, a binding agent used in amalgams, has come under scrutiny
lately by some heath officials who claim it may cause long term health
issues. Watertown does not allow dentists to dispose of mercury amalgam
scraps in their trash or waste water. Dentists must have special waste
haulers dispose of it.
