Brushing is the best way to remove
cavity and gum disease causing plaque and other debris from your teeth.
Your teeth are covered with a sticky film of bacteria called plaque.
Following a meal or snack, the bacteria release acids that attack tooth
enamel.
Repeated attacks can cause the enamel to
break down eventually resulting in cavities. Plaque that is not removed
with thorough daily brushing and cleaning between teeth can eventually
harden in to calculus or tartar. Brushing and cleaning between teeth
become more difficult when tartar collects above the gum line. The gum
tissue can become swollen or may bleed. This is called gingivitis, the
early stage of periodontal (gum) disease.
Oral hygiene and general health are
strongly connected. Recent studies have shown that neglecting your
dental care may also be damaging your heart, increasing your risk for
stroke, making it harder to control diabetes, contributing to low birth
weight babies and now possible links to pancreatic cancer. More simply
put poor dental hygiene leads to inflamed gums, which is basically
giving dangerous bacteria and open door to enter your body.
Our practice believes power toothbrushes
are the best choice for all age groups. They effectively remove plaque
and are safe for all kinds of dental work and enamel. It is recommended
that you brush your teeth two times a day with ADA-accepted
fluoride toothpaste. |
